There was a strong possibility that if we got a game on we could be the only ones in the league to pick up points. We were guaranteed 2nd place but in order to overtake Bedworth we had to bat 1st and hope that Bedworth got a loosing draw. Ambleside turned up late so I claimed the toss and batted 1st. The wicket resembled a football pitch in the middle of January with chunks coming out every time a ball was balled. Mahroof top scored with 76 to set up a total of 156-9 in 50 overs. At tea the skipper of the 2nd xi Bedworth team turned up to watch and tell us that their game had been cancelled. We now knew that a win would be enough for us to finish top. The bowlers played their part and took wickets at regular intervals. Unfortunately they were not supported in the field with 4 dropped catches. Ambleside reached 90-9 with 8 overs left but in the end we were unable to take the last wicket.

Scorecard:Ashfield
T Bartlett Bowled Gamer 6
Mahroof Azam Ct Heath 76
M Chisholm Ct S Wagstaff 1
O Shah Ct T Rumble 25
R Brown Ct T Rumble 1
M Sutton St J Heath 1
N Udoh Ct Rumble 11
S Shams run out 1
B Chana St Heath 9
C Bourne Ct Heath 1
M Cole not out 0
Sub total 132
Extras 24
Total 156

Scorecard:Ambleside
J Qayyum Ct Sutton 15
B Patel Ct Udoh 2
C Smith LBW Udoh 3
T Rumble run out 27
G Rumble Ct Mahroof Azam 10
Z Qayyum Ct Chana 5
C Garner LBW Udoh 8
J Wagstaff not out 14
S Wagstaff Bowled Mahroof Azam 0
S Healy Bowled Mahroof Azam 2
J Healy not out 0
Sub Total 86
Extras 12
Total 89-9

Bowling:
N Udoh 14-4-25-3
B Chana 13-1-28-2
M Sutton 6-1-13-1
Mahroof Azam 12-6-20-3
O Shah 5-2-5-0

Mahroof Sets Up Easy Win

A solid all-round performance gave us an easy win against bottom of the table Highway. In hindsight perhaps I should have stuck with my own plan because not only the low score but the shots that most of the ‘batsmen’ played would not be seen on a school play ground. Having put them into bat they managed to get to 217-9 although at one stage they were 36-5. Amer was again the pick of the bowlers with 5-47. In reply we made a good start and we were coasting along at 125-2 but then with Mo Azam getting out for 45 the momentum was lost. Despite loosing wickets we were always in the game and with 3 overs left , 3 wickets in hand we needed 35 to win. Shazad then smashed 20 in one over but was then given out LBW. Six balls left, 10 to win and last pair A Crossley and Amer at the wicket. Amer Cleared the ground with the 1st ball of the over and it now looked comfortable with 4 to win from 5 balls. It finally came down to 2 balls left with 3 to win and 2 to tie. Amer played it to mid-wicket and the in the panic Crossers who palying his last game for the club before moving to Amercia was run out. We finished 2 runs short. Nuneaton who were in second place in the league were determined to play regardless of the conditions. Our guys felt quietly confident but we weren’t going to let on that availability at Ashfield was pretty strong. Having lost the toss we were asked to bat 1st. with the match was reduced to 46 overs per side. Kam stood tall with an impressive 87 to set up a total on 203. They knocked off the runs in the 42 over with 6 wickets down.

V Kings Heath

There was confusion with the start times! The league handbook stated 1pm and our club handbook had a start time of 1.30pm – so typically there were only 3 of us at the ground at 12.45pm so they claimed the toss and asked us to bat first.

It was one of our strongest batting displays and we accumulated 214-10 from 48 overs. Main contributor Omar Shah (55). The bowling was as accurate as it had been all season and Riad Hosain – playing against his old team was at the receiving end of some banter from Kings Heath but he answered them in true fashion by getting 9-0-28-4 to go with his 23no. We eventually bowled them out for 146 from 41 overs.

V Bedworth

Another cracker! They won the toss and set us a target of 202 to win. Yasir Shah bowled with pace to claim 15-2-64-4

At one stage we were cruising to victory with 160-4 from 37 overs but with Qasim Shah (62) getting out it caused the castle to tumble. We were in it right up to the end where we needed 3 to win off the last ball with Yasir facing. He did all he could but top edged one to 3rd man and was held out. Only if it was a yard either side of the fielder it would have been 4 – the game is not played with ‘if and but’s’ otherwise we would have been top of the table.

V Atherstone

It was the last game of the season and about 9 of us turned up physically but not mentally. I said enough to the lads on the day so I will keep this short. They batted 1st and totalled 288-6 – we dropped approximately 9 catches.

The batting was not much better and we managed 195-10 with young Kamran Qamar 55no and Humais Butt (47).

V Old Edwardians

Rain!!! On a dry wicket Omar bowled really well and bagged five wickets. If it wasn’t for Omar at one stage they looked on course to get over 300 but in the end we were left to chase down 244.

It should have been a gettable score but again the batting failed and it was left to Nigel and Sooty to grind out a draw for us. The pair of them must have batted for more than 25 overs. When they don’t bowl well they dig in with the bat perhaps one or two others need to learn and do the same.

Scorecard - Sheldon

A Pathner Bowled O Shah 43
J Rasin Bowled O Shah 106
R Singh Ct O Shah 14
M Benton Bowled Shah 9
M Falague run out 26
S Bees Bowled Q Shah 1
A Evans Ct O Shah 4
A Maguire Nout Out 0
M Reed Bowled Q Shah 0
A Mahmood Nout Out 1

Sub Total 204
Extras 40
TOTAL 244

Scorecard - Ashfield

K Qamar Ct Rasin 11
Q Shah Bowled Rasin 4
H Butt Ct Jenkins 30
S Shams Bowled Rasin 1
O Shah Bowled Rasin 4
N Udoh Not Out 31
T Mahmood Ct Adeel 1
B Chana Ct Rasin 4
M Sutton Not Out 25
C Bourne BNB
Y Shah BNB

Sub Total 111
Extras 17
TOTAL 128 - 7

Ashfield V Kenilworth

Just to surprise you we won the toss and decided to bat. That was the only thing that went right for us and from there on it was all down hill.

As usual we lost wickets at stead intervals and there is not much to write home about as we were bowled out for 118 against a team that were 2nd from bottom. I can’t put my finger on it but is it lack of experience from the batters, is it over confidence or just lack of application?

Anyway they didn’t have much problems getting to the target with the loss of just 3 wickets and 6 dropped catches!

Scorecard - Ashfield

S Shams Bowled Armstrong 18
Q Shah LBW Rees 10
A Crossley Bowled Armstrong 0
H Butt Ct Armstong 7
T Mahmood Bowled Peebles 2
O Shah Ct Kennel 16
K Qamar Ct Kennel 14
C Sheeham Bowled Peebles 1
B Chana Bowled Armstrong 27
M Sutton Bowled Peebles 5
C Bourne NOT OUT 1

Sub Total 101
Extras 17
TOTAL 118

Scorecard: Kenilworth

Faulkener Bowled O Shah 10
Laverick LBW Sheeham 53
Sallis Bowled Butt 9
Pebbles NOT OUT 15
Kane NOT OUT 11

Sub Total 98
Extras 21
TOTAL 119

M Sutton 4-0-16-0
C Bourne 5-2-8-0
H Butt 7-0-34-1
O Shah 9-1-20-1
B Chana 6-1-17-0
C Sheeham 3-1-13-1

Second Loss of The Season

The balance of the 2nd XI was disturbed on the Saturday morning with the news that the 1st XI had another player drop out. Earlier in the week we knew Nigel was to play for the 1st but on the morning we lost our other main bowler in Sooty. Not a good start but perhaps one of the younger bowlers could use this as an opportunity to step up.

I am getting sick of tell you but you should know by now that on helpful bowling conditions we lost the toss again and they asked us to bat. I thought things had turned around because at one stage we were 90-1 and looking set for 200 plus. Qasim Shah made an effective 34 but there after wickets fell steadily yet again. We finished on 155-9 from 50 overs. Normally that may have been enough with the likes of Sooty and Nigel in the side but we knew we had a real challenge to bowl them out.

Humais opened the bowling and took three quick wickets to leave them on 74-4 at this stage the game was in balance and it could have gone either way. However, their captain came in at No4 and made a solid 69no to take his side home with just 6 wickets down. They were not the best side we have played and it was a real opportunity missed for us to be closer to the league leaders.

Scorecard: Moseley Ashfield
S Shams Ct & Is it because we lost? Am I a bad looser? No far from it – I just don’t like to loose!

It should not come as a surprise to you when I tell you that under helpful bowling conditions we lost the toss and they asked us to bat first. Arguably they had the best opening attack that we have faced in the league to date. Yet again it was the same story where we lost wickets steadily and they bowled us out for 122 from 46 overs with only three of us making double figures.

With the wicket still damp and the strong bowling attack that we had we all believed that we could bowl them out. So confidence was high in the changing room. True to form ‘psycho Sooty’ (Martin Sutton) who has been bowling out of his skin all season put us right back in the game by removing their top four batsmen. Soon we reduced them to 76-6 and the target of 122 seemed a long way away. Ray and Nigel chipped in with 2 wickets apiece and that left them on 102-9 but in the meantime their number 7 had been batting well while wickets fell around him. The lads fought hard but in the end just on this occasion it proved a little too much us. Credit to their guy who finished on 52 no.

Scorecard: Moseley Ashfield
S Shams Ct Colkin 34
A Crossley LBW Walters 5
I Rehman Bowled Tedds 13
T Mahmood Bowled Tedds 4
N Udoh LBW Walters 0
R Noshein Ct & B Colkin 10
C Sheehan Ct & B Colkin 0
H Butt run out 3
K Qmar not out 19
M Sutton Ct Robbins 2
C Bourne Ct Simpson 4

Sub total 99
Extras 23
TOTAL 122

Scorecard: Nuneaton

S Barker LBW Sutton 6
D Topp C&B Sutton 9
T Baites Bowled Sutton 12
T Whitehouse Bowled Sutton 1
D Colkin Bowled Rehman 4
R Harris Bowled Rehman 13
A Matthews Not Out 52
C Walters LBW Udoh 1
B Robbins Bowled Udoh 0
L Tedds LBW Sutton 1
J Simpson Not Out 0

Sub total 106
Extras 17
TOTAL 123
N Udoh 12-2-35-2
M Sutton 14.1-3-35-5
I Rehman 9-3-20-2
H Butt 3-0-11-0
Hosein 2-0-15-0

Thrilling last over win

I am running out of words to describe these thrilling 2ndXi games. This weekend’s match against Atherstone was on par with THAT finish against Bablake. In a way from my point of view it was better because we had five under seventeen’s playing and they ALL made valuable contributions.

Now to the game. We lost the toss and surprisingly they decided to bat. It is becoming a nice habit of taking wickets at regular intervals and that trend continued. Sooty again removed their openers with 30 on the board. Ray (Iltaf Rehman) came on and his control and pace were much improved and he too knocked over two of their batters. That left them in a hole at 56-4 in 22overs. Another bowling change and more wickets fell as Qasim bowled with the same control and finished with 2-29 from five overs. Humais, who was playing his first for the 2nd Xi also held his nerve to have figures of 4-0-9-1. By this stage they were seven down and we were running out of the 3 hours allocated to finish our overs. One of their guys made it clear that they would claim the extra overs if we went over our allocated finish time. We had 45 minutes to bowl 18 over or take 3 wickets. It was time to bring Nigle back on to try to finish them off and true to form he removed their number 7 thanks to an outstanding catch by young wicketkeeper Kam who took it diving in front of 1st slip. We evetutally bowled them out for 162-10 from 42 overs – just five minutes before the allocated time! It of course meant we had all of 57 overs to chase down their target.

The batting again did not go according to plan and with 2 unfortunate LBW decisions we were left on 63-5 and things weren’t looking too cleaver. The next bit is harder to write-up because I’m not one for wanting the spotlight, so I’ll keep it brief. I had opened the batting and just hung around for as long as I could. Those watching, which by the way included the club Chairman, a number of Honorary Vice Presidents and the ex-Warwickshire and England wicket-keeper Geoff Humpage who came to the ground to see some of his Ashfield pals may say my knock was a bit pedestrian, others may say it was boring but some said it was well timed. Having slowly got nearer to their score it left us needing run a ball for the last 60 runs. At this stage Calum came in at number 8 and made a valuable 34 which kept us in touch with the run rate. Calum’s contribution should not be underestimated in this run chase he struck a 6 and 4 4’s. It again came down to the last 2 overs and left us needing 12 to win. We ticked over the runs and the scoreboard showed us wanting 6 to win of the last over. However, having asked the scorers to double check the target it turned out that THEIR scorer had made an error and in fact we only needed 4 to win. I was held at deep mid-on for 61 and with 3 balls left we needed 3 to win, up stepped Humais and he cleared the in field and slapped it over cover point for 4! Another win! That leaves us just 9 points behind the leaders.

I know I keep going on about it BUT have a look at the extras AGAIN they will cost us a game. Early conditions helped their bowlers and we lost wickets consistently. However, Tom was the only one to show any kind of resistance with a solid 60. We ended on 172-9 from 50 overs. Our bowlers were again asked to get the batters out of jail. It should not come as a surprise to anyone to hear that Nigle and Sooty between them conceded just 40 runs from 25 overs and took 3 wickets. The rest of the bowlers chipped in and took wickets regularly and eventually bowled them out for 129-10 from 46 overs. It was another good win but the batting needs to improve as we come up against better opposition. The bowlers need to take note of the number of extras that we are giving away. They will end up costs us if we can’t sort this problem out.

Scorecard: Moseley Ashfield
A.Pervaiz Ct Usman 13
T Bartlett Bowled Turrell 60
S Shams LBW Beckford 13
T Smith Ct Turrell 5
I Rehman LBW Beckford 24
T Mahmood Ct Beckford 9
O Shah Ct Beckford 8
N Udoh Not Out 17
Q Shah Ct Lockyer 0
M Sutton Not Out 5
C Bourne DNB
Sub total 154
Extras 18
TOTAL 172

Scorecard: Kings Heath
J Patel LBW Sutton 3
D Eims LBW Q Shah 31
D Paget LBW Rehman 10
N Ahmed Bowled Q Shah 6
J Greaves LBW O Shah 0
J Torrel Ct O Shah 14
M Beckford LBW Udoh 0
Usman Ct Sutton 7
J Lockyer Not Out 10
K Abbas LBW Mahmood 10
R Hopkins LBW Rehman 0

Sub total 88
Extras 41
TOTAL 129
N Udoh 11-1-19-1
M Sutton 15-5-21-2
C Bourne 4-1-16-0
I Rehman 9-0-32-2
A Pervaiz 1-0-12-0
Q Shah 4-0-10-2
O Shah 5-2-7-2
T Mahmood 2-0-6-1

V Bournville

No Play - Rain

Graveyard Comes Alive With Tense Win

Match winner Sooty fielding at backward-45 on the one ! (Also Pictured Tommy behind the sticks, Andy Crossley at Point and CB at slip)

Everyone who played or watched the game against Bablake will tell you that it will go down as the game of the season. The graveyard came alive on Saturday 9th June 2007 with a tense finish that saw Moseley Ashfield win by 3 runs! On a warm day we won the toss we decided to bat first. At one point it appeared to have been the wrong decision because within the 1st 20 overs we were 77-7 with some of us getting overconfident and playing shots more suited to a 20-20 game. However, Ray (Iltaf Rehman) batting at number 8 to turn things around with a responsible 65no. It gave us a competitive score of 182-10 in 43 overs. The opposition started well and were 99-2 from 30overs. The breakthrough came when Ray had their opener ct and bowled in the 31st over and from this point on wickets fell at regular intervals. Abu chipped in with 3-28 and it left them needing 34 with 4 wickets in hand from 17 overs. At this point, Sooty who had been pumped up all day took over. He took their 7th wicket with a ct and bowled and Ashfield could smell an unlikely victory. This now left them needing 18 from 8 overs with 3 wickets in hand. Ray took wicket number 8 and Sooty removed their 9th man. It was now down to 3 runs from 6 overs. Up stepped psycho (Martin Sutton) Sooty (Almost Stuart Pearce style when he scored THAT penalty for England). Sooty bowling at their number 7, who thought he could finish it in one hit, drove it firmly back only to see this ‘spring chicken’ pull it out of thin air. He took the catch and dropped to his knees. In taking the final wicket the celebrations from the lads were perhaps more notorious with a game of football than cricket as Sooty was lost with 10 men pilling on top of him. Bet you’ve never had that before Sooty! Having been put into bat under helpful bowling conditions Tom, who opened the batting, looked determined to make his mark on the game. He took his time to see off the new ball but then accelerated just at the right time playing shots all round the wicket with 11 four’s and a 6. He had scored 35 at the drinks break (25 overs) but then his 100 came up in the 44th over. It was his maiden century for the club and true to his word he called his father to buy a round of drinks for the lads! In the end we managed a competitive 208-7 from 50 overs. The bowlers took a while to get into their stride and at one stage the opposition were 67-1 but our secret weapon in the form of leg spinner Riad Hosein destroyed their middle order with figures of 8-2-18-4. This included bowling their captain behind his legs as the tried to sweep – almost Warney style! After that up stepped Ray (Iltaf Rehman) for his second spell and cleaned up the tail finishing with 9-2-24-4.

Scorecard: Moseley Ashfield
A.Pervaiz Bowled R Khan 07
T Bartlett Bowled R Khan 105
S Shams Ct Chandler 45
T Smith Ct Khan 19
T Mahmood Ct Ali 1
Q Shah Ct Ali 10
I Rehman Ct Ali 0
N Udoh Not out 0
R Hosein Not out 1
M Sutton Did not bat
C Bourne Did not bat
Sub total 187
Extras 21
TOTAL 208

Scorecard: Old Edwardians
G Ali Ct Pervaiz Hosein 32
P Clare Bowled Rehman 20
Zubair LBW Rehamn 8
C Lloyd Run Out 2
M Thorton Bowled Hosein 0
S Jukes Bowled Rehman 16
J Junior Bowled Hosein 0
Adil LBW Hosein 1
R Khan Bowled Rehman 3
N Chandler Not out 0
M Ali Run Out 6
Sub total 88
Extras 39
TOTAL 127
N Udoh 6-2-14-0
M Sutton 6-0-16-0
I Rehman 9-2-24-4
C Bourne 9-2-25-0
R Hosein 9-2-18-4
Q Shah 4-0-7-0
A Pervaiz 3-1-5-0

A Mix Bag

The weekend got off to the worst possible start with the news that the 2nd XI were given a 15points penalty by the league for what can only be described as an ‘administration’ error. The team were made aware of this just before Saturday’s game and perhaps with that in mind they went out and truly demolished Kenilworth. Having put the opposition in to bat we bowled them out for 108 in 38 overs. Old boy Chris Bourne finishing with figures of 9-5-9-5 He’s still got it in him! The batting was made to look just as easy and we knocked off the runs with the loss of just one wicket in 19 overs. Shuja managing 70no.

As for the game against Sheldon well the weather had the final say. It had rained almost continuously from Saturday evening to Monday and it was called off without a ball being bowled.

Moseley Ashfield V Bronze

Ashfield won the toss and put the opposition into bat. A total of 2.5 hours were lost due to rain! In the end we managed to bowl out Bronze for 151 in 49 overs. Ray (Rehaman) bowled a lively spell of 2 for 31 and the deadly leg spin of Riod (4 for 12) killed them off! In the end we were left with a revised target of 152 from 26 overs. The two youngsters (Abu and Tom) got us off to a solid start of 81 for the 1st wicket. The middle order fell apart which left us needing 32 from the last 3 overs but in the end in proved too much as we finished on 140-8.
